27 - HATSHEPSUT, the Woman , Pharaoh.

HATSHEPSUT

(1507 A.C. – 1456 A.C. )

One of the few women who has had the upper title of Egypt.

HATSHEPSUT

(1507 B.C. – 1456 B.C. )

Bright and bold woman, was 12 years old at the time of the death of his father, the Pharaoh Thutmose. The line of succession was unclear and even a son of Pharaoh with some minor wife, successor could be chosen.
Indeed, there was a half-brother, Thutmose II, son of his father with a secondary wife.
Hatshepsut married her stepbrother and thus became Queen of Egypt, but was only formal Queen Consort.
Thutmose II little  known, sickly and frail, died at age 40 .No made great works or great military campaigns.
Hatshepsut was 32 when her husband died .It was now Queen of Egypt and was in the prime of life, but as Queen woman should be represented to "keep up appearances" with a beard and carry the attributes of the Pharaoh, including skirt.

Almost immediately undertook the most ambitious construction program in years.
Again official workshops again produced sculptures and figures of great leader of Egypt.
His masterpiece was the complex of "Deir el Bahari" .Never a Queen had built a Palace that size and features, located in the Theban mountain, its clear and straight line , is still shocking .
It is a wonderful work of art, but also an important political statement: the Queen of Egypt was again Divine Order and this Order would be restored: Pharaoh would do great things again, as before.

It also highlights in their architectural works , the Obelisks of Karnak Temple
They were a monumental work and were made in the granite quarries , with a big
porte reaching 32 m in height and 350 tons in weight and with a  transport and installation process sophisticated and laborious. Even today, would cost to move them too.

To consolidate his power Hatshepsut trusted Senenmut , whom he chose as his daughter Neferura Tutor and Supervisor of the royal works.
Commoner origin, reached the highest royal charges.

The Queen had to make a political deal with her stepson Thutmose III, the "male seasoning" and therefore legitimate heir.
Apparently they reached an understanding Political - Military:  Her ,was the Queen and he will organizer and General of the Army .
She had the support of the clergy and other great leaders, including his right hand : Senenmut
He developed an important work of government, Egypt enjoyed security and prosperity and there was popular acquiescence, which is why she managed to stay in the Supreme Power.
A situation that would be repeated through the ages, even today: if things go well and there is stability, legal formality "fits" in the circumstances.
Numerous innovative commercial arrangements were made, especially with the Kingdom of Punt, located to the south (now Sudan), with whom he communicated both by land through the Red Sea.
De Punt gold, frankincense and myrrh were brought .The trees were transported with the roots carefully wrapped and protected, to be replanted in Egypt.

Senenmut was undoubtedly a very close collaborator and some even say he was loving his Queen. Although there is no evidence this.
If it is known, and this amply demonstrated that Senenmut, was buried in a tomb worthy of a great personality, inscribed with all the titles that he had got and  even  a Real Sarcophagus.
Until then no commoner was buried that way.
Hatshepsut went unnoticed at first for Egyptologists.
It was not until many years later, it showed that it was actually a woman.
And perhaps prejudices of the researchers ,was initially speculated that it was only a figurehead and it actually was Senenmut  who ruled .
Today we know much more about it. She was an outstanding leader and through its agreement with Thutmose III undertook a very positive co-Government for Egypt.
Thutmose III succeeded his death and conducted major military campaigns, using the army formed and maintained in times of Hatshepsut.
But finally, 20 years after the death of Queen Hatshepsut's name was erased from monuments and replaced by his Father, Brother, Husband etc.
It could not be  a woman leaving his mark as ruler of Egypt.
Finally, in these modern times, a mummy called KV60a, discovered in the Valley of the Kings in a somewhat unnoticed without coffin, after to several studies was later attributed  to Hatshepsut.

The Legacy

She was a bold, intelligent and ambitious woman, with great political acumen to govern "the Two Lands" of Egypt for 22 years.
At his death this Queen Pharaoh let a prosperous and stable country and defeated the attempt to pass into oblivion and time itself.

We now know who she was and what was his palace. Nothing less than a  Great Woman.
