56 - IMHOTEP & The Step Pyramid at Saqqara - Egypt ( Brief Videos )

IMHOTEP

The Architect and Genius Imhotep (2650–2600 BC) was the Architect Chief of Pharaoh Djoser and served as Chancellor  and high Priest of the Sun God Ra.
He is considered as the first architect and engineer in early history. Egyptologists ascribe to him the design and construction of the step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara in Egypt in 2630 – 2611 BC.
Before Djoser, Pharaohs were buried in mastaba tombs.

  The great Work of IMHOTEP

Djoser (III Dynasty - 2667 BC ), was the first deified Pharaoh, "the stones opener ", "the discoverer of the stone."
Wise and very religious, had in mind the Concept of life after death, then he took care to make a proper grave for his life in the other world.
It was the first to do it in stone. For this he had the Architect indicated: Imhotep, who besides Chief Architect, served as Prime Minister.
No doubt  his work as a builder immortalized him, to the point that the Romans, great builders, venerated him on the altar, several centuries later.
Imhotep designed and performed the Step Pyramid of Saqqara, a geat architectural revolution.
He had to organize a legion of workers, who were offered with clothing, food, beer and tax free, certainly were not exactly slaves, lived in barracks and were accompanied by their wives. Apparently also they had a day off. Organizing them into teams of 20 men, IMHOTEP came to join a labor force of about 10,000 men.
In his work he designed a complex burial chamber and underground rooms beneath the pyramid, tens of meters deep and a network of 6 km of underground and secret passages, plus ramps, using wooden beams Fenicia to prop ceilings ( still exist).
In these rooms there are funerary decorations of sea-water enamel, hieroglyphs ,figurations and murals with men carrying the donations to deceased owner of the tomb to ensure his  survival in the afterlife.
This means that under the Pyramid is the Sarcophagus of Pharaoh and true funerary Palace of Djoser.
After this stage, he advanced in the construction of the first Piramide  made with 6 Mastabas that become narrowed upward, tending toward Heaven, made of limestone quarried near Saqqara.
There it began to develop a system of extraction, manipulation (transfering the blocks with sleds ) and stone colocation , revolutionary in the history of Egypt.
